THE STORY BEHIND VIRGINIA VINTAGE FLOORING

What is it that connects us to things?  In your friends’ homes, what objects do they care most about?  Almost without exception, you’ll find that it’s an item that has a story behind it.  A personal story, perhaps… They found the piece in an exotic marketplace while on vacation, or it was a gift from a person who was important to them.  Maybe the item has a story of its own, like a conversation piece that has a unique origin or an heirloom that has an unusual history. 

Whatever it may be, the item holds a special meaning for its owner. And, even though it’s merely a thing, its story has become part of the owner’s story. It’s become part of what makes their home a distinctive living space.

The Human Touch.

When we first began developing Virginia Vintage Flooring, we were inspired by these kinds of objects in our homes and in the homes of others. We started by thinking about the one element that these objects all seem to have in common. They’ve been crafted and cared for, but their history is visible, textural and tangible. They have imperfections caused by use or age or by the hands of the person who crafted them.  These imperfections make the object one-of-a-kind and lend it an eloquence that’s obvious even before you know the story behind it. Wooden objects seem to show their history especially well. Through a single chisel mark, the slightest half-moon indentation from the face of a finishing hammer or the rough edge of a joint made with a handsaw, we can imagine the craftsman making the piece. We can imagine the sounds of the town where his shop was located. And suddenly, if we allow our minds to wander just a bit,we can be transported to another place entirely.That’s the power of handcrafted wood. It’s a quality that the robotic precision of machined wood products just can’t duplicate. With this concept in mind, we created our richly textured, hand-scraped Virginia Vintage Floors.
